I spent this past week being a "single parent" while Jamie was away in PEI/NB. I spent this past week reminding myself how amazing women and men who single parent full (or part) time are! And I spent this past week wondering where the parenting manual was??? Parenting is hard. I'm not really sure that it ever gets easier, just ask my mom and dad! That's not to say that Donovan and I didn't have a great week, because we certainly did all we could to make the most of our "Mommy/Donovan" … [Read more...]
from scratch
Since starting the "from scratch" series I've really enjoyed the motivation it's given me to keep making more and more things from scratch at home. I think my family has enjoyed the fresh food too! I haven't bought a loaf of bread in over a month (almost two I think!) and I even bought some fresh whole wheat flour at the farmers market last week to make my bread with. I canned my own cherry tomatoes a few weeks ago, and then make from scratch tomato soup from those same tomatoes. I also … [Read more...]
camping out
"Mommy, can I camp out tonight?" My initial thought pattern was going through all the reasons why camping out wasn't a good idea, it was already past bedtime being at the top of that list. But then the little voice inside my head took over, the one that remembered that being a kid isn't just about bedtime and routine, the one that reminded me that this night could either be a disappointment, or one he would remember happily for years to come. "Sure!" I said, and instructed him out of bed. … [Read more...]
oma and opa
When it became apparent that Jamie and I were becoming a serious couple, I remember saying to him how sad I was that he would never get to meet my Oma. She had died when I was in grade school, and although I didn't meet Jamie until 10 years later, I still missed her. Still do. She had the most kind gentle spirit, and a way about her that made anyone feel at ease. She wasn't overbearing, but always made how she felt clear, in her quiet loving way. I remember staying the night at their house, … [Read more...]
why do i always need a vacation after a vacation?
We had a mini-vacation this weekend, and it was FANTASTIC! We drove up to Edmonton on Thursday morning in eager anticipation of the NHL hockey game that we got tickets for this Christmas. It was the show down of my Edmonton Oilers vs. Jamie's Montreal Canadians! Because the game was on a Thursday we decided to make a little weekend out of it, and stayed in the city until Sunday. Of course I use the term "city" loosely as other than the game on Thursday night, we actually never left the mall! … [Read more...]
surprise day
I've mentioned before that my sister is an Optometrist, generally she is out-of-town when I have any kind of eye emergency (there is a link here to when I got a HUGE swollen sty on my eye while Kerrie was out-of-town, but of course I can't find it! gah! I will keep searching for it, but in the mean time, just pretend that it's here), but even still, I love her and wouldn't go anywhere else to get my, or my families eyes checked. Today it was Donovan's turn to get his eyes checked. Just about … [Read more...]
